Haeckel's major work was devoted to a species of single-cell protozoa called Radiolaria. All members of this class of marine animals are united by what Haeckel termed "organic stereometry"... complex patterns of symmetry with differing levels of complexity. The specimens shown here have perforated silica shells protected by "spicules." The ray-like projections add buoyancy and act as flotation devices. On receiving a gift of Haeckel's two-volume tome on Radiolaria, Darwin replied (March 3, 1864), "They are the most magnificent works which I have ever seen and I am proud to possess a copy from the author."
