ERNST HAECKEL: ART FORMS IN NATURE

The order of jellyfish shown here with its "umbrella" and eight leafy projections (mouths) is displayed from various vantage points. It was a species discovered by Haeckel in Bellagemma, Ceylon, in December 1881. Haeckel used the chandelier shape of this specimen as a model for ceiling decorations in his home, the Villa Medusa, in Jena. Another version of this image can be seen in the Museum of Oceanography in Monaco
