The central character in this array of figures is a large lens-shaped marine protozoan. Its half-shell is perforated by numerous small sieve-like holes from which radiate hundreds of movable filaments. These protoplasmic threads serve for locomotion and absorption of food. The smaller specimens of the species display an astounding variety of geometric patterns, distributed with unfailing regularity on their ridged surfaces.
