Protozoa:
With the advent of microscopes in the 17th century (Leeuwenhoek, 1674), protozoans were discovered. They are minute replicas of the cell unit of higher animals with similar organs and structures. As such, they have been indispensable in exploring such fundamental questions as the structure od protoplasm, growth, and regeneration, fertilization and cell division, and the causes of senility. Discoveries in parasitology have led to treatments for malaria, amoebic dysentery, and African sleeping sickness.
