SCIENCE IS WE - MBL SUMMER 1954
The RNA Tie Club, 1955
Francis Crick, James Watson, Leslie Orgel and Alex Rich sport their new RNA club ties. Missing from the group is George Gamow, one of the founding members and chief organizer of the club. "The members of the RNA tie club would be united by their ties as well as a desire to understand the role of RNA in protein synthesis. The membership initially would be limited to 20 members, one for every amino acid." The first meeting of the club was in Woods Hole during the summer of 1954, with Gamow as "synthesizer," Watson as "optimist," Crick as "pessimist" and Alex Rich as "Lord Privy Seal."
